ISLAMABAD (Urdu Times) Currently, China has become one of the leading global players in terms of healthcare technology innovation and implementation. Over the last decades, the country has invested heavily into the development of medicine, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, digital healthcare, medical devices, genomics, and pharmaceutical technology. China’s huge population, growing healthcare infrastructure, strong manufacturing abilities, and growing scientific research sphere have provided a great environment for development of the technology. Due to the fact that China not only invents the technology but implements them widely, it is a great contribution.<\/p>\n
China has made significant contributions in the fields of healthcare and artificial intelligence (AI). AI solutions that can help the doctors to diagnose diseases, analyze medical images, and predict potential risks have been invented in Chinese universities, technology firms, hospitals, and research centers. In some cases, AI can analyze X-rays, CT, MRIs, and other medical images faster and more accurately than the traditional approach. Such technologies can be used for identification of neurological diseases, heart conditions, cancer, and eye disorders. The hospitals can use the technologies to facilitate the process of making clinical decisions, scheduling appointments, and managing the patients’ records. This will decrease the workload of healthcare providers and increase patient access.<\/p>\n
Moreover, China has made significant contributions in the spheres of digital healthcare and telemedicine. Due to the huge size of the country, the healthcare resources are distributed unevenly with specialized medical services being provided in large cities only. With the help of digital technologies, the problem can be solved by putting the patients from remote and rural areas in touch with the doctors working in urban hospitals. The mobile health apps, remote diagnosis, electronic medical data, and consultations became more popular. During the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospitals and tech firms invented online healthcare platforms to reduce unnecessary physical contact while providing access to medical advice. It accelerated the development of the services.<\/p>\n
The third sphere is the sphere of biotechnology and genomics. China has invested a lot of money in the genetic research, DNA sequencing, precision medicine, and biotechnology. Chinese companies and research organizations created large-scale databases and sequencing facilities. The genomic technologies can help scientists to identify the genetic factors of the diseases and use them for the creation of personalized approach to treatment. For example, in the treatment of cancer, genetic analysis can help to define molecular markers of the tumor and to choose the right therapy. Thus, development of China’s biotechnological industry contributed to the global shift towards the precision medicine.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, China is one of the major players in the pharmaceutical and vaccine industries. The ability to develop, test, produce, and distribute vaccines was demonstrated by China during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Several vaccines against the coronavirus disease were created by Chinese companies using different technologies. Apart from COVID-19, China invests into the biological drugs, innovative medications, biosimilar products, and vaccines against infectious diseases. Besides, the huge pharmaceutical production industry of China makes a significant contribution into the supply of pharmaceuticals and their active ingredients globally.<\/p>\n
Robots and medical devices are also among the spheres of the technological progress. Complex medical equipment including imaging systems, diagnostic tools, monitoring devices, surgical tools, and laboratory technologies can be manufactured in China due to its powerful manufacturing industry. Also, the companies and researchers from China develop rehabilitation technology and surgical robots. The rehabilitation robots can help patients recover after accident, stroke, or any other injury while the robots will help the surgeons in performing precise movements and better visibility. Development of the domestic medical device production can decrease the dependence on imports and lower the cost of the technology.<\/p>\n
The progress in 5G and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies also influences the development of the healthcare technology in China. With the help of the fast networks, the exchange of the medical data can take place in real time. Some experiments with remote consultations, medical education, and remote assisted treatments have been conducted due to the use of 5G technology. Moreover, connected devices will collect the data for the medical specialists and monitor the patients’ vital signs. This development affects primarily elderly patients and patients with chronic conditions requiring ongoing treatment.<\/p>\n
Besides, China is developing wearable medical technologies. The indicators such as heart rate, physical activity, sleep pattern, and level of oxygen in the blood can be measured with the help of smart watches, fitness trackers, and other connected devices. Numerous types of such devices were manufactured by Chinese technology firms both for domestic and international markets. The consumer wearable devices can encourage preventive health behaviors and provide useful data for the management of healthcare but they cannot replace the expertise of the medical diagnosis.<\/p>\n
The huge population and healthcare infrastructure of China are the reasons for the contribution to health technologies. The enormous environment for the testing, evaluation, and implementation of new technology is provided by the population of over a billion.<\/p>\n
However, fast development of the medical technology in China also raises serious moral, legal, and social concerns. The personal data such as genetic information and medical records are important for the health technologies. That is why it is crucial to ensure the privacy, cybersecurity, informed consent, and ethical data usage. Moreover, if the AI systems are trained on the incomplete and biased data, they can reproduce these biases. In addition, the innovations such as genetic engineering and reproductive technology require careful ethical oversight. Usage of gene editing technology in China has raised an international debate highlighting the importance of adhering to the high ethical standards along with the technology advancement.<\/p>\n
In conclusion, China has become a significant contributor to the development of the health technologies. Artificial intelligence, digital healthcare, biotechnology, genomics, vaccines, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, robots, 5G, and wearable technologies are some achievements that influenced not only local healthcare but international innovation. Due to the unique combination of the scientific investments, technological knowledge, manufacturing abilities, and huge population, China has a great potential to shape the future of medicine. However, ethical protections, data security, scientific transparency, fair access, and international cooperation should follow the technology development.
